Montana’s Must-Visit Summer Swimming Spots
One of my favorite things about summer growing up was heading to our go-to swimming holes. There’s just something special about finding that perfect spot along a creek, river, or lake where you can cool off, splash around, and spend hours hanging with friends.
Montana might be known for its hot springs, but let’s not overlook the incredible "cooler" escapes we’ve got too. From peaceful river bends to lakeside beaches, there’s no shortage of places to beat the heat. Honestly, the toughest part isn’t finding a good spot—it’s deciding which one to go to first.
Here Are 3 Swimming Holes And Beaches To Check Out In Montana
#3 City Beach, Whitefish Lake
Whitefish Lake is a beautiful 7-mile-long glacial lake tucked up in Whitefish, Montana. One of the go-to public spots to enjoy it is City Beach, which sits near where the lake flows out. It’s a great place to spend the day with a sandy beach, shady grassy areas, a marked-off swimming zone, docks, picnic tables, and even a few gazebos for hanging out.
# 2 Red Rock, Glacier National Park
If you can handle very cold temperatures, a great pull-off on the Going-to-the-Sun Road is Red Rock. It's located around mile 18 and features a stunning blue pool for a refreshing dip.

#1 Fairy Lake, Bozeman
Fairy Lake is a stunning alpine spot about an hour from Bozeman, sitting at the base of Sacajawea Peak in the Bridgers. It’s a short walk from the parking area, with emerald-green water perfect for swimming, a flat loop trail around the lake, and access to camping or hiking.
