‘SNL’ and Justin Timberlake Go on a Trip to ‘Wrappinville’
Few guest performers seem to get 'SNL' quite like Justin Timberlake, who has a wonderful habit of showing up on the stage and creating classic sketches and characters with seemingly no effort. In most cases, he would easily overshadow the actual guest host, but when that guest host is show alum (and current late night superstar) Jimmy Fallon, there is less overshadowing and more comedic awesomeness.
As he has multiple times in the past, Timberlake took on the role of a goofy mascot in this week's cold open and the results were as funny as ever. Through sheer force of will, Timberlake takes a set-up 'SNL' viewers have seen too many times and a few jokes that are, quite frankly, a little tired, and gives them the necessary juice to power through. Then again, you really can't go wrong if you just let the man sing and dance and generally be silly on camera. Of course, it helps that the always funny Aidy Bryant is on hand to provide support.
But the real reason to watch the sketch is to see Timberlake and Fallon riff with each other. For whatever reason, these two share a chemistry that other members of the actual cast would kill to achieve. We may be in a bit of a rebuilding year for TV's greatest live comedy sketch show, but this is a reminder of just how great the show can be.
