For whatever reason, some Montanans love all things creepy.

Ghost tours and paranormal experiences are trendy around the state, and Montana certainly has its fair share of creepy places to check out. We've got the old Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge, The Dumar Hotel in Butte, and the old Montana Orphange in Twin Bridges. All three will no doubt make the hair raise on your arms, but according to one popular publication, none of them are the creepiest in the state.

So which Montana destination takes the top spot?

Before we reveal the top spot in Montana, let's take a look at the creepiest places surrounding our state.

In Idaho, the top spot goes to the old Idaho Penitentiary in Boise. In North Dakota, the creepiest title goes to Fort Abraham Lincoln in what is now Bismarck, and in South Dakota, it's the historic Bullock Hotel which is located in Deadwood. Down in Wyoming, Fort Laramie is listed as the creepiest spot in the state.

Back to Montana, it might not come as a big surprise that the creepiest spot in the state is an old ghost town, but the question is which one?  There are several old ghost towns across the state, but when it comes to the creepiest place in Big Sky Country, that distinction goes to Bannack.

Once a booming town known for gold, Bannack now stands as a reminder of "Old Montana" with buildings and homes that are well preserved from days gone by. Bannack is a popular spot, especially during the summer as both locals and tourists travel to learn about the past in a setting that allows you to actually feel like you've stepped back in time.
