Montana And Motorcycles: Just How Safe Is Big Sky Country?

Here we are in the middle of November in Montana, and we're seeing spring-like weather.

Last year was my first non-white Christmas in Big Sky Country, and while I haven't looked at the future forecast, I'm hoping we get some snow at some point. However, in the meantime, it's allowed me to ride my motorcycle longer than I normally would.

I've long dreamed of having a motorcycle, and after sitting around thinking about it for years, I decided that I wasn't getting any younger and pulled the trigger. I bought myself a nice, used Harley-Davidson Softtail and have really enjoyed cruising around the area.

Now, I know what you might be thinking: they're so dangerous. And yes, there is a risk associated with riding a motorcycle, but I have some information for you that might change your opinion if you're on the fence.

How safe is Montana for motorcycles?

Montana is renowned for its beauty, and many motorcycle enthusiasts consider it a must-ride destination, with popular roads like the Going-to-the-Sun Road and the Beartooth Highway ranking among the top.

According to the folks over at Big Auto, which is a law firm that specializes in auto accidents, when it comes to riding your motorcycle, you can't get any safer than Montana.

Yep.

Montana tops the list for the safest state for motorcycle riders. Oh, and it's not just Montana that's in the top; our neighboring states rank high as well. Both North Dakota and South Dakota make the Top 10 for safest states.

How safe is Montana compared to other states? The data suggests that Montana's fatality rate is 29 times lower than the most dangerous state for motorcycles (Mississippi). Plus, our fatality rate is 6 per 100,000 registered riders.

Now, that doesn't mean you shouldn't be on the defensive. As a rider, I'm always looking out for others, as should you. Plus, I highly recommend wearing a helmet.
