I recently fulfilled a lifelong dream by purchasing a motorcycle.

While many have questioned whether I'm going through a mid-life crisis, the truth is that I've always wanted to spend time on a bike, especially in the summer months. Plus, I can't think of a place better for summer riding than Montana.

Like any major purchase I make, I spent way too much time researching and figuring out which bike would be the best for me. As someone who had a dirt bike as a kid, I've spent time on bikes, but it's been a very long time. I knew I wanted something that would allow me to cruise across the state in comfort, so I settled on a Harley-Davidson Softail.

Now that I have the bike, the next step is the training.

I signed up for one of the state's motorcycle courses that helps riders prepare for life on the road. The 2-day course prepares folks to be road-ready and know all of the basic things needed when riding on Montana roads. The great thing about the course is, not only is it hands-on, but if you pass it, you can skip the skills portion of the Montana Motorcycle Test.

I'm also told that taking the course may end up saving you a few dollars on your insurance.

What about helmets? What are the Montana laws regarding motorcycle helmets? While most folks will tell you that wearing a helmet significantly reduces your chance of death, in Montana, those over the age of 18 have the option not to wear a helmet when riding.

Living in Montana means you have a limited amount of time to ride, and it should be noted that the fatality rate has increased over the last couple of years, however, there are some interesting factors behind that as well, including the following:
