When you live here in Montana, there are just certain things that are a given. Roadwork in the summer, lots of tourists and bad drivers, and snow.

With the Holiday season upon us, folks are preparing Christmas Day menus, buying and wrapping last-minute presents, putting up decorations, and getting ready for one of the most festive times of the year.
With that being said, I can't be the only one wondering if Montana will see a white Christmas this year.

To me, it just doesn't feel like Christmas without snow. I lived in Florida for a couple of years and it was ridiculous. People decorated their palm trees, folks walked around in shorts and flip-flops. Listen, I enjoy warm weather as much as the next person, but not for Christmas.
Christmas is about tradition. Things like Snowmen, gloves and scarves, and sledding down hills during Christmas break are some of my favorite memories. After you would come inside for cookies and hot cocoa No one wants to drink cocoa when it's 82 degrees outside.

What are Montana's chances for a white Christmas?
According to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Montana has a decent chance for a white Christmas, but several states have a better shot.
Montana is sitting at just over 50 percent of a chance (56.5) for a white Christmas which places it as the 10th Most Likely State to Have a White Christmas. Now, I should probably clarify that while many parts of Montana will see snow this Christmas, the data from NOAA is based on "the average probability of more than one inch of snow depth"
There are a couple of states in our region ranked higher than Montana for the likelihood of a white Christmas. Both Idaho and North Dakota rank ahead of The Treasure State with Idaho ranked 9th, and North Dakota ranked 2nd.
Oh and in case you were wondering which state ranks 1st, that would be Alaska with an 84 percent chance for a white Christmas.
If you're like me and holding out for a white Christmas, at least we have a pretty decent shot. To quote the song no matter where you spend Christmas this year "May your days be merry and bright, and may all of your Christmas' be white."
