The Old Farmer’s Almanac may not be 100% accurate, but it has been a fairly reliable resource for years. The 2025–2026 winter outlook for Montana is shaping up to be a wet one, especially in certain areas throughout Montana.

According to the Almanac, much of the Treasure State should brace for a mild and dry winter, while western Montana is predicted to see above-normal precipitation. That means earlier snow in some regions and a stronger chance of prolonged cold snaps that stretch deep into February, and possibly even March.

Places like Bozeman, Missoula, and Whitefish are likely to receive more snow than the rest of the state this winter. Snow and cold will come in waves, and late winter could bring a few surprises, so don't be too hasty when it comes to putting away your snow shovel.

Winter is expected to be warmer than normal, with the coldest periods occurring in late November, early December, and early February. Precipitation will be slightly above normal, with below-normal snowfall in the north and above-normal south. The snowiest periods will be in late January, early February, and late March.

February and March are predicted to be the snowiest months this winter, so if you're looking forward to hitting the slopes and finding the best powder, the end of the season should be the best.
