A powerful explosion erupted at a saltwater disposal facility just south of Sidney, Montana, on Wednesday evening, sending shockwaves across Richland County and lighting up the eastern Montana sky.

The blast sent shockwaves through the small town and could be felt as far as 10 miles away, according to local reports. It happened roughly three miles south of Sidney along Highway 261, in a rural area dotted with oil and gas infrastructure.

U.S. News & World Report released updated details about the explosion on Thursday morning.

Authorities say an explosion at a storage and disposal plant in the oil fields of eastern Montana Wednesday night was felt by people 10 miles (16 kilometers) away but caused no injuries or fatalities.

Pictures and videos of the explosion were shared on social media. The cause of the fire and explosion is still under investigation, and the specific materials inside of the tanks are unknown.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25. Crews were still battling the blaze early Thursday morning. Local residents reported seeing a large fireball high in the sky.

Storm chaser Aaron Rigsby was driving to Canada when he noticed the fire at the facility. He used his drone to capture incredible aerial footage.

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported. This is a developing story and more information will be added as it becomes available.
