NEW RECALL: Sausage, Hot Dogs for Hazardous Amount of Nitrate
Nearly 20,000 pounds of various meat products are being recalled due to 'sodium nitrite levels that exceed the regulatory limit'. The USDA issued this recall based on products distributed in New York, but issued a nationwide email alert to be safe.
There are many different products that are under this particular USDA recall, so please check the full list of recalled product labels. A few of them are shown here - but not all of them.
Smith Packing, LLC, is recalling approximately 18,792 pounds of various ready-to-eat sausage and sliced meat and poultry products due to sodium nitrite levels that exceed the regulatory limit, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) received complaints from consumers of off-color products and an off-taste. These complaints triggered the investigation. Here are more important details about the recalled products:
- The ready-to-eat sausage, sliced meat, and poultry items were produced between February 19, 2025, and April 24, 2025.
- IMPORTANT: There have been NO confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
- The recalled products bear establishment number “EST. 4578” or “P-4578” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
- FSIS is concerned that some products may be in institutional and consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.
- These items were shipped primarily to institutional and retail locations in New York (but the email alert was sent nationwide).
