Gold Fever: 3 Places To Try Your Luck In Montana
Do you have a desire to strike it rich one day? Maybe get lucky and stumble across a giant gold nugget? Well, they don’t call Montana the Treasure State for nothing—and you’re definitely not the first dreamer to chase that golden shimmer. Back in the 1800s, the West was practically built on gold fever. Mining towns popped up faster than you could say “Eureka!" While many faded into ghost town status, the gold-hunting spirit still lives on.
While the odds of finding a nugget the size of a potato are slim (but hey, never say never), you can still do a little modern-day prospecting here in Montana. If nothing else, it’s a good excuse to get your hands dirty, spend a day in nature, and maybe...just maybe, strike a bit of luck.
Here are three spots in Montana where you can pan for gold and feel like a prospector from days gone by...
1. Libby Creek Recreational Gold Panning Area
Located in the Kootenai National Forest, this is a legit public panning site with a history of producing gold. No permit needed, just bring your pan and patience.
2. Missouri River near Helena
This area helped birth Montana’s gold rush. Today, you can still pan along certain sections. Also you are likely to find some of Montana's famous sapphires!
3. Garnet Ghost Town Area
Once a bustling mining town, now a spooky (but scenic) spot for history lovers and hopeful prospectors alike. There are public lands nearby where panning is allowed.

Montana’s rivers are gold panning goldmines... just follow the rules. It’s allowed on most public lands (not in parks), and always get permission on private land. Using heavy equipment? You’ll need a DEQ permit. Keep it simple, legal, and respectful out there.
