1943-D Lincoln Wheat Cent: Bronze/Copper

It’s considered the holy grail of pennies, and there's a fascinating twist—very few of these were actually made with bronze during that year because they were supposed to be steel. A small batch of them ended up being minted with leftover copper from 1942.

The value of a genuine 1943-D Lincoln Wheat Cent can be jaw-dropping. In average condition, according to USA Coin Book, it can go for around $472,330, but if you're lucky enough to find one in perfect shape, it could be worth between $950,424 and a whopping $2,414,612! Crazy, right?

1944-S Steel Lincoln Wheat Cent

Similar to the 1943-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, this penny is valuable for it's unique material. All the pennies from 1944 were supposed to transition from steel back to copper/bronze, but a handful did not make it.

The estimated value of this penny is about $428,636 if it's in average condition, but if it's in mint condition, it could be worth between $795,399 and $1,191,536!

These are just a few of the valuable pennies that are listed as being worth tons of money and you can check out a larger list with details HERE.

The takeaway? Think twice before dumping your change into a Coinstar machine. You never know what hidden gems might be mixed in. Better yet, do what I do—stash your coins in a jar and go through them on a rainy day. Even if they’re not worth millions right now, some might be down the line. Either way, you could be sitting on a small fortune and not even know it.
