The Beartooth Highway, one of Montana's most scenic, is officially open for the season.

The Beartooth Highway is 68 miles long, and runs from Red Lodge, Montana through northwest Wyoming to the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park. It has been called one of the most scenic drives in North America.

A friend and I decided to drive the Beartooth on Sunday. It was interesting to see all of the skiers and snowmobile riders hanging on to the last bit of winter. There were literally hundreds of skiers. Much of the landscape is still covered with a thick layer of snow and some snowdrifts along the highway are taller than 20 feet.

Here are a few pictures from my trip.

The Montana Department of Transportation is advising travelers that due to the high elevation on this mountain pass, travelers should check current weather and road conditions.

Crews make every effort to keep the road plowed and open, however unpredictable weather conditions may cause temporary closures throughout the summer.
