If you’re a Montana resident and a die-hard bird hunter, this news is gonna hit just right. One thing we all count down to each year is opening day, it’s practically a holiday. But if you hunt public land, you know it’s not just about when the season starts… it’s about being first. First boots on the ground means first crack at unpressured birds, before they get spooky and start switching up their normal habits.

And let’s be real—the pressure isn’t just from locals anymore. Out-of-staters have been pouring into Montana, drawn to our world-class bird hunting. That added competition has made early-season strategy even more critical.

Well, good news: Governor Gianforte just signed a new law giving Montana residents a head start. That’s right—locals will now get early access to upland game bird hunting before non-residents can jump in. It’s a win for homegrown hunters and a small edge in the ever-growing competition for clean shots and unbothered game.

A special 10 DAY Head Start for resident bird hunters will begin on March 1, 2026.

“This legislative session, we continued to protect our Montana way of life. I was proud to join Senator Gregg Hunter to celebrate his hard work and ceremonially sign Senate Bill 514,” Gov. Gianforte said. “Through the bill, we’re giving Montanans a 10-day head start for upland game bird hunting to encourage residents to enjoy our hunting season.” - MT Governor's Office

Vintage Photos Of Montana

It's hard to imagine what Yellowstone National Park would look like in black and white. We are so used to seeing the colors that make it one of America's favorite travel destinations. Jezel Doughert's grandmother passed away and like many of us do, she spent hours going through years and years of history, from old yearbooks to news clippings, to pictures. Jezel sent me a piece of history that, if not for her, I wouldn't be able to share with you.
