Beware! Bull Elk Are Extremely Dangerous During Rut Season

According to Yellowstone National Park, the elk rut has begun.  Every fall, elk enter their breeding season, or rut. The rut continues for about a month and usually begins in the middle of August. The rut reaches its peak in the middle of September.

During the rut, you may have the chance to hear bull elk bugle in an attempt to attract a mate. While witnessing it is truly majestic, bull elk can also become extremely aggressive, and it is advised to keep your distance.

YNP officials say that many people have been severely injured by elk. Elk have the ability to run quickly, and can change direction in an instant. It is recommended that you keep your distance, and stay at least 25 yards from elk at all times.

If an elk charges you, find shelter in your vehicle or behind a tall, sturdy barrier as quickly as possible. You are responsible for your own safety.
