For those of us who've been able to watch Tommy Mellott play football for the last several years, it's been a pleasure.

The Butte native will forever be a legend for the Bobcat faithful, and dare I say, he might have even won over a few Griz fans as well. Mellott put on an absolute clinic in his final game as a Bobcat, which took place in Frisco, TX, as the Cats took on NDSU for the National Title.

Although MSU came up just a little short, there was no doubt that number 4 gave it everything he had.

How good was Mellott at Montana State? Well, the resume speaks for itself:

  • MSU's First Ever Walter Payton Award Winner
  • MSU's First Ever Doris Robinson Scholar Award Winner
  • Walter Camp FCS Player of the Year
  • First Team FCS All-American

With the NFL Draft approaching, the question is whether the Montana standout will play at the next level. We know he has met with a few teams, including the Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, and the Washington Commanders. The other question is, what position would he play?

It's not unheard of for players to change from the QB position once they go pro. Many NFL players have done so. Terrell Pryor, Julian Eldeman, Hines Ward, and Blake Bell, just to name a few.

Could Mellott make the transition and play in the NFL on Sunday?

There's no doubt he is an incredible athlete, and he certainly has the will and the heart to make it. Keep in mind that he ran a 4.39 40 and had a 41-inch vertical, which would have been a record at the NFL Combine for a Quarterback.

Mellott worked on catching the ball for his Pro Day with wide receiver and punt return drills. He could end up as a WR or he can play on Special Teams. According to Google, the "experts" have Mellott as a fringe pick, possibly going in the 7th round.

Keep in mind, some pretty impressive football players have gone in the 7th round, including Brock Purdy, Bo Jackson, and Shannon Sharpe.

There is also a good chance Mellott will be signed as an unrestricted free agent if he doesn't go in the draft. Either way, most of, if not all of, Montana will be cheering for Butte's favorite son. I know I will.
