I have a theory.

Some people are born to teach, while others happen to teach for a living. Looking back on my days spent in a classroom, there were a handful of teachers who made a big difference in my life. Mrs. Jobe, Miss Rae, and Mr. Page had a huge impact on me, and several others also played a role.

Oh, and did I mention that my wife is a teacher? I know firsthand how much work they put into what they do, and before you say, "Yeah, well, they only work 9 months a year". First, that isn't true. Many teachers take part of their break to plan for the upcoming year, and others have a part-time job to help make ends meet.

So why would Montana teachers need a part-time job? Well, because Montana is not a great place for teachers.

Is Montana a good place for those who teach?

The answer to that question is no. According to WalletHub, the only state worse than Montana when it comes to teaching is Hawaii. Because it includes Washington, D.C., Montana is ranked 50th when it comes to teachers.

The factors that went into determining the rankings are:

  • Oppotunity and Competition
  • Academic and Work Environment

Should Montana teachers make more money? I certainly think so, and it's not just because I'm married to one. These are the people who are teaching our children. Oh, and in case you didn't know, they're doing a lot more than teaching these days. They're counseling, parenting, and befriending these kids.
