Montana undoubtedly has its heroes, and most of them are not famous. In a rural state like this, your neighbor might be the one who shows up when you need help the most. Whether it is digging you out after a storm or responding in an emergency, community matters here in a big way.
That is why it is always worth recognizing the people who dedicate their lives to serving others. Recently, Gov. Greg Gianforte presented the Spirit of Montana Award to Park County Rural Fire Chief Dann Babcox. The honor recognizes his 25 years of service and leadership in protecting his community.
Babcox started as a volunteer firefighter and worked his way up through the ranks over the years. He eventually became the district’s first full time fire chief, helping oversee a department that covers more than 600 square miles. That includes responding to everything from wildfires, house fires, severe weather events, and major accidents.
One of his lasting contributions came in 2016 when he helped create a partnership with Helena College. The program allows students to live at the fire station while gaining hands-on training. This undoubtedly helps build the next generation of firefighters while supporting a department that relies heavily on volunteers.

About 95% of the team is made up of volunteers, something Babcox has always taken pride in. The Spirit of Montana Award recognizes people who go above and beyond, and in this case, it is clear that kind of commitment has made a lasting impact on the community.

The Hell's A-Roarin' Horse Drive

The Hell’s A-Roarin’ Horse Drive happens every Memorial Day weekend in Gardiner, Montana, as hundreds of horses are driven from the rodeo grounds up to the mountain town of Jardine. Hosted by Susan and Warren Johnson of Hell’s A-Roarin’ Outfitters, this Western tradition honors veterans and supports them in a meaningful way. All net proceeds from the event’s live auction go toward purchasing Action Trackchairs—custom, all-terrain wheelchairs that help disabled veterans regain their freedom and access to the outdoors. It’s a powerful mix of community, heritage, and heartfelt purpose.
