Many Montanans are passionate rock collectors, otherwise know as rock hounds. Montana is arguably one of the best states in the country when it comes to amazing rocks and minerals.

Depending on where you are in the Treasure State, the rocks and minerals that you can find differ greatly. The rocks and minerals in western Montana are far different than those found in the eastern part of the state. I spend a lot of time on rivers, and find a lot of cool stuff. Everything from petrified wood to some really cool agates.

If you are interested in rock hounding in Montana, there are some great Facebook pages to follow. A couple of my personal favorites are Rockhounding Montana and Montana Moss Agate Collectors. You can get a great idea of the variety of rocks in Montana by following those pages.

I've enjoyed collecting rocks pretty much my entire life. Some would probably call it an addiction. Over Labor Day weekend, my roommate and I drove four hours to search for rocks on the Yellowstone River in eastern Montana. I think we may have a bit of a problem. I've put together a gallery of some of my personal favorites from this summer. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Happy hunting!
