Let's be honest, Montanans love to have a drink or ten.

We've read all the information about how certain towns in Montana (Missoula) are among the drunkest in the country (Gallatin) and how a specific county is the drunkest in the nation.  We get it, we drink A LOT here in Big Sky Country.

A quick Google search reveals that we have around 100 breweries and around 20 distilleries. Beer, Whiskey, Vodka, Gin, we make it all right here in the Treasure State.

So with all of that booze, which beer do you think is the most popular in Montana? Is it Cold Smoke Brew? What about Montucky? How about something from Big Sky Brewing?

According to McLuck, the most popular beer in Montana isn't made in the state, it's not even made in the USA.

While I'm not shocked at which beer McLuck names the most popular, I'm a little surprised it wasn't one of the Montana-based beers. McLuck states that the most popular beer sold in Montana is brewed over four thousand miles away.

That's right, according to McLuck and Google searches, the most popular beer sold in Montana is Guinness.

When you think about it, it makes sense. Montana has deep Irish roots and just the beer sales for St. Patrick's Day in Butte alone probably made it the number one selling beer in the state. Guinness has been around for well over 200 years and has an extremely loyal following all over the world.

While we don't know where the first Guinness was sold in Montana, chances are, it was somewhere in or near Butte. While there are a few quality Irish Pubs in Butte, the oldest is the building where Shawn O'Donnell's is located. Before O'Donnell's took over, it was the site of the old Mac's Tavern.

The building dates back to 1884.

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
