According to the source, here's why:

  • Low Population/Large State
  • Coal and Gas Reserves
  • More Cows than People
  • 1/3 of Nuclear Missiles
  • Plenty of Food

Of course there are more reasons and one of the biggest is that because of it's size, and all of the mountains, an invading Army would get lost.

What other states made the list?

Now before all the doomsday folks decide to pack up their stuff and move to Montana, you should know there are other states that are ranked very high as well. Places like Florida and Ohio. Don't forget about California and Pennsylvania.  They all make the Top 10.

However, if you are curious about which state takes the second place, we've got the answer and it might not come as a big surprise.

If you can't make it to Montana, your next best option for survival is the Lone Star State. Yep, Texas takes the second spot, which makes sense, because when I think of Texas, I think of Number 2.
