Let’s face it, winter driving here can get sketchy fast. One minute the road’s clear, the next it’s a sheet of ice slicker than a buttered frying pan.  Across the United States, there are about 1.2 million weather-related crashes each year, resulting in nearly 5,000 fatalities. But where does Montana rank in that? Well... we aren’t exactly at the bottom of that list.

When you think about it, it makes sense. We’ve got wide-open highways, brutal crosswinds, and long stretches of road where you might not see another vehicle, or a snowplow, for miles. The combination of black ice, blowing snow, and low visibility is a recipe for disaster, especially in rural areas. In fact, according to new data, Montana ranks fifth in the nation for weather-related wrecks.
According to the research, Montana averages about 1.66 weather-related crashes per 100,000 people. That might sound small, but in a state where we’re spread out and the population’s thin, that number packs a punch. Wet pavement and falling snow are the biggest culprits, cutting traction, messing with visibility, and stretching out stopping distances like nobody’s business.

Even seasoned drivers aren’t immune. Locals know the drill; slow down, keep your distance, and for the love of all things holy, don’t use cruise control when the roads are slick. It might save you a few seconds, but it could cost you a lot more.
So as winter rolls in, take it easy out there. Montana roads are beautiful, but when the weather turns nasty, they can be downright dangerous.
