When you think of Montana and food, steak is probably the first thing that comes to mind. And for good reason—there are more cows than people here. Ranching runs deep in our state’s identity. But as times change, so do eating habits. More people are choosing plant-based lifestyles, and that’s led to some interesting developments in the food world, like lab-grown meat.

Now, personally, I wouldn’t touch the stuff. I do my best to stay away from anything overly processed or full of preservatives. If it doesn’t come from the ground or a real animal, I’m not too interested. And it turns out, Montana’s governor feels pretty strongly about this too. He’s taken a firm stance and has officially banned lab-grown meat across the state.

Governor Gianforte recently signed House Bill 401 into law, officially banning the manufacturing and sale of lab-grown meat here in Big Sky Country.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Braxton Mitchell (R-Columbia Falls), defines cell-cultured edible products as...

“the concept of meat, including but not limited to muscle cells, fat cells, connective tissue, blood, and other components produced via cell culture, rather than from a whole slaughtered animal.”

Starting October 1st, there will be real consequences. Any retail food business that manufactures, sells, or distributes lab-grown meat could have their license suspended and face misdemeanor charges, fines, or even jail time if convicted.

The goal behind this new law? To protect Montana ranchers and the integrity of our food supply.
