Warning to Montana Drivers: New Construction to Cause Major Delays

A major road construction project in Belgrade, Montana is expected to cause major delays for drivers this summer.

Montana residents know that when temperatures begin to warm up, it marks the beginning of construction season in the state. Due to Montana's long winter, crews only have a short time to complete major projects.

The project, which will provide a much-needed upgrade to one of the busiest roads in the state, is scheduled to begin on June 9, and will last approximately two months. Traffic control will be in place, and drivers can expect significant delays.

The Montana Department of Transportation released important details about the project and what to expect this summer. You can see a map of the project below.

Crews will begin work on the Jackrabbit-Amsterdam Road Intersection project on June 9, 2025. The purpose of the project is to improve traffic operations, enhance safety, and provide accessibility improvements and connectivity.

Here is a complete list of improvements.

• Upgrade the existing signals by adding flashing yellow arrows
• Improve bike/pedestrian features according to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) design standards
• Add retroreflective backplates to signals at Amsterdam Road/Jackrabbit Lane
• Provide protected-permitted left turn movements for all legs of the intersection to improve traffic flow
• Widen the east leg of the intersection (MDT in partnership with the West Post Development)
• Improve ADA elements of the Interstate 90 (I-90) Eastbound Ramp

During construction, drivers can expect reduced speeds, flaggers, and rough roadway surfaces. The work may cause delays of up to 15 minutes. Additional information regarding the project can be found on the MDT website.
