Favorite School Lunch? We Have a Winner, and it’s a Landslide
Just in case you didn't know, this week is National School Lunch Week. A week that we celebrate, well....school lunch. Also a shout out to all of those folks who make and serve lunch in school. Who didn't have a favorite lunch person growing up?
Speaking of favorites, almost every kid had a favorite school lunch growing up, that one item that you just got excited for.
For me, that was easy. The rectangle pizza.
I'm not sure what went into it, and I don't even care. What I do know is that it was perfection and seemed to get better with each bite. Pepperoni or Sausage, it didn't matter. Once you finished that odd-shaped slice of heaven, you went for the napkins to wipe off all the grease that was running down your hand.
I'm told that while they still have it, it isn't nearly as good as it used to be because they've tried to make it "more healthy". Someone always has to ruin a good thing.
For my radio partner Megan, her favorite school lunch was "turkey tidbits". To be honest, I have no idea what that is. However, to quote her, "it's chunks of turkey mixed with gravy spread over mashed potatoes or rice, depending on what the school had leftover". I mean, it doesn't sound horrible.
I asked a bunch of folks on social media what their favorite school lunch was and it wasn't even close. Hands down, the rectangle pizza wins big.
However, I feel like there were a few honorable mentions that we need to talk about, so I present...Favorite School Lunches That Aren't Rectangle Pizza
- Turkey Tidbits (yes, a couple other folks apparently had this as well, who knew?)
- Chili w/Peanut Butter Sandwiches
- Chicken Pattie Wednesday
- Taco Salad Day
- Ice Cream Sandwich
- Beanie Weenies
- Spaghetti
- Chicken Nuggets
- Corn Dogs w/Tots
Whatever your favorite school lunch, I hope that you can look back on those days and have some fondness of what were no doubt, simpler times. If you are anything like me, the tv shows were better, the music was better, and life seemed a whole lot less complicated.
So let's celebrate this week.
I would suggest we do so with a rectangle slice of pizza, but someone thought it would be a good idea to chance the recipe. We should probably go find that person...
