Retail Trouble in Montana: More Closures on the Horizon?
This year has been a rough one for retailers, and a troubling trend is emerging—closures.
Big names like Joann Fabrics, Big Lots, Forever 21, Macy’s, and Walgreens have all faced financial struggles or shut down locations. According to a recent report from Coresight Research, which tracks U.S. retail trends, up to 15,000 stores could close in 2025.

Unfortunately, the trend isn’t slowing down, and the latest addition to the list is Dollar General.
As the parent company of Dollar General and PopShelf, Dollar General Corporation's struggles are surprising—especially since new locations seem to pop up like weeds everywhere. Despite its widespread presence, the company announced plans to close 141 stores across both brands. However, it remains unclear if any Montana locations will be affected.
The Big DG dropped their fourth-quarter and fiscal-year 2024 earnings REPORT and decided to make the cut based on those numbers.
“As a result of this review, the company plans to close 96 Dollar General stores and 45 pOpshelf stores, and convert an additional six pOpshelf stores to Dollar General stores in the first quarter of the 52-week fiscal year ending January 30, 2026 (‘fiscal 2025’),” - Dollar General Corporation.
Right now, you can find Dollar Generals in these Montana towns: Billings, Columbia Falls, Eureka, Hardin, Libby, Ronan, Sidney, Thompson Falls, Troy, and Victor. In some of these towns, shopping options are pretty slim, so losing a Dollar General could be a real headache for locals.
Dollar General also noted that due to rising inflation and the cost of living are taking a toll on consumers’ spending habits.
"Many of our customers report they only have enough money for basic essentials, with some noting that they have had to sacrifice even on the necessities," CEO Todd Vasos.
Only time will tell whether any local Dollar General stores in Montana will close, but it is clear that retailers and communities are struggling.
