Carrie Underwood has just gotten back to work after the birth of her first child, but she says the transition isn't nearly as difficult as she had feared.

The country superstar gave birth to son Isaiah Michael Fisher in February, and she returned to the stage for the first time at the CMT Awards on Wednesday night (June 10), where she also took home top honors for her "Something in the Water" video. She says her baby makes it easy for her and her husband, Nashville Predator Mike Fisher.

“I think I honestly expected — it’s gonna sound weird — but I expected the worst,” Underwood tells People. “I’ve never been around babies before, to be honest, but he’s so laid-back!”

She says that she and Fisher are "laid-back parents," and "it surprised me that it’s a little easier than I thought it was gonna be,” adding that her boy is "happy and smiley and gorgeous.”

It sounds like the proud mother is lucky to have a baby who makes it easy all the time, but she admits there's one time of day that's her favorite. “In the morning, when he first wakes up, he’s the sweetest. He’s a morning baby,” Underwood says. “He is smiley and laugh-y and happy and cuddly and that hour, the first hour he’s awake, is just the best.”

Underwood took some vacation time recently, but she's been back at it, even taking her son to band practice recently. She's scheduled to play select fairs and festivals this summer.
