Montanans, the next time you buy your favorite snack or drink off the shelf, you should read the ingredient list for this soon-to-be-banned additive.

These days, there are not many products on the shelves that you don't have to worry about. It seems like every time you turn on the news, there is another cancer-causing ingredient that we find out about.

I know it's frustrating, and the government seems to be slow in filtering out the harmful things we consume in America, but the FDA just announced a new ban on Red Dye No. 3.

Red Dye No. 3 is an additive in 1,000s of commonly purchased products. We apologize if any of these are your favorite num nums. Regardles if they are delicious snacks, you might want to consider removing these from your pantry.

  • Brach's candy corn
  • Certain jelly beans
  • Betty Crocker Loaded Potato Casserole
  • Ring Pop Berry Blast
  • Betty Crocker Sprinkles
  • Trolli Sour Crunchy Crawlers
  • Yoo-hoo Strawberry Drink
  • Dubble Bubble Original Twist Bubble Gum
  • Mccormick Bac'n Pieces Bacon Flavored Chips
  • Pop Tarts Frosted Confetti Cake Bites

The decision was made after two studies were published that showed cancer in male laboratory rats exposed to the additive. While there have been no reports of Red No. 3 causing cancer in other animals or humans, it seems risky enough to warrant a ban.

We say check your shelves and ingredients because the ban is not taking effect until January 18, 2028. Companies that use Red No. 3 have until January 15, 2027, or January 18, 2028, to reinvent their ingredients.
