Montana is known for some pretty incredible wildlife viewing opportunities. It makes sense with how wide open it is and the fact that we are home to places like Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park. For a lot of visitors though, there is one animal at the top of the list, and that is the American bison.
Not that long ago, bison numbered in the tens of millions across North America. Today, seeing them in the wild is a much more unique experience, and Yellowstone is one of the most well-known places to do it. But it is not the only option in Montana.

One great spot is the CSKT Bison Range. This area is home to a herd of around 350 bison and has a long history tied to conservation. It was first established in the early 1900s and is now owned and managed by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. The land and the herd have deep cultural roots, and today it stands as a place where wildlife and history come together.

Another place to keep on your radar is American Prairie. Specifically, their Sun Prairie and Buffalo Camp locations. Here, bison roam across a massive landscape and are not confined to one small area. They can cover a lot of ground in a single day, so sightings can feel a bit more like a true backcountry experience. You can view their maps HERE.
