Is There A Creature Lurking Beneath Flathead Lake?
Do you ever fall down an internet wormhole and suddenly stop to ask yourself, how did I even end up here? That was me last night. It started with videos of massive waves rolling across Flathead Lake. That turned into reading about Native American history in the region. Before I knew it, I was staring at stories about a legendary lake monster supposedly living right here in Montana. Somehow, after spending plenty of time on Flathead, no one ever mentioned a possible creature lurking below the surface. I clearly need better friends. If you are just as unaware of this legend as I was, here is the story behind Montana’s most mysterious resident.

Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, so maybe it is not surprising that folklore has grown around it. The creature is often nicknamed Flessie or Flossie and is commonly compared to Scotland’s Loch Ness Monster. Besides Native American legends, the first major recorded account happened in 1889.
According to the 1889 historical report, passengers aboard a steamship crossing the lake claimed to see a massive, animal-like shape moving through the water. What they first thought was a floating log reportedly lifted and revealed something far larger and alive. Since then, sightings have continued to pop up, with more than a hundred reports over the years. Descriptions often share similar details. Witnesses talk about a long, dark body, sometimes compared to an eel or serpent, measuring anywhere from 20 to 40 feet. Some claim it has flippers, while others describe a small head perched on a curved neck rising above the water.

Long before these modern stories, Native tribes in the area shared their own explanations. Kootenai oral traditions talk about of a giant creature being seen in the waters. Whether viewed as a mythical being, a misunderstood natural phenomenon, or simply a great campfire tale, the legend has deep roots.
