Adam Levine stunned the entertainment world when he unexpectedly decided to leave his gig on The Voice after sixteen seasons. And though the show will undoubtedly be very different without one of its two mainstays, nobody is going to miss Levine as much as Blake Shelton.

Shelton and Levine formed what might have seemed like an unlikely friendship from the very first season they started working together on the iconic reality television singing competition, falling into an affectionate ongoing comedy routine that played on their rivalry to keep things entertaining between scenes.

The pair often traded barbed words as they fought to land the best contestants over the course of the show, but it was always clear that underneath it lay genuine friendship, respect and affection. They forged a longtime bond that they didn't hesitate to show while the cameras were rolling; in fact, their frequent hugs, joking kisses, inside jokes and even feeding each other fries in one instance might have come off a little weird if the music superstar odd couple weren't so darn adorable. Levine's decision to leave was particularly surprising because it comes just two weeks after NBC announced on May 10 that all of the Season 16 coaches would return for Season 17.

Shelton turned to Twitter to react to the unexpected news with a mix of genuine emotion and the kind of banter that made their onscreen chemistry so special over the years:

Levine's replacement ought to take some of the sting out of his departure, though. Shelton's girlfriend, Gwen Stefani, is returning for Season 17 of The Voice, joining Shelton, John Legend and Kelly Clarkson on the coaches panel.
