Montana Still Has No Statewide Texting While Driving Ban
Have you ever had a close call with someone who was clearly on their phone while driving? Or maybe you have caught yourself glancing down at a notification longer than you should. It happens more than most people want to admit.
April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and it is a good reminder of how common and dangerous these habits can be. What makes Montana a little different is that it is currently the only state without a full statewide ban on texting while driving.
That does not mean there are no rules. Cities like Bozeman, Billings, and Missoula have local ordinances that limit or ban handheld phone use behind the wheel. But once you are outside city limits, those restrictions often disappear.
Distracted driving goes beyond just texting. It includes anything that takes your attention off the road. That could be eating, adjusting your GPS, reaching for something in the backseat, or even getting lost in your own thoughts. The numbers are a wake up call. Thousands of people die each year in crashes linked to distracted driving. Even something as simple as reading a text can take your eyes off the road for several seconds. At highway speeds, that is like driving the length of a football field without looking.

At the end of the day, it comes down to personal responsibility. Whether there is a law or not, keeping your focus on the road can make all the difference.
