Sad news just broke at 10:45 a.m. this morning, February 16th. Legendary actor Robert Duvall has passed away at the age of 95. For many Montanans, myself included, this one feels personal.
The announcement was shared on his official Facebook page in a message from his wife, Luciana. She wrote that he passed peacefully at home, surrounded by love. She described him not only as an Academy Award winning actor and filmmaker, but as her everything. She spoke about his deep commitment to every role he took on and the way he poured himself into telling honest, human stories. She also thanked fans for decades of support and asked for privacy as the family honors his memory.
Here is the official post below...
Here in Montana, Duvall’s legacy carries special weight. One of his most beloved roles was Augustus McCrae in Lonesome Dove, the Emmy winning miniseries that followed a cattle drive from Texas to Montana. That story of grit, friendship, and the West resonated deeply with audiences here. It remains one of my personal favorites.
My personal favorite quote of Lonesome Dove...

“It ain’t dying I’m talking about, it’s living. I doubt it matters where you die, but it matters where you live.” Augustus McCrae

Montana was not just a backdrop in his work. Duvall spent two summers as a young man on his uncle’s ranch in northern Montana, a time he remembered fondly.
"Spending two years on my uncle's ranch in Montana as a young man gave me the wisdom and the thrust to do westerns." - Robert Duvall
He also filmed scenes for The Stone Boy in and around Cascade and Great Falls in the 1980s.

The Hell's A-Roarin' Horse Drive

The Hell’s A-Roarin’ Horse Drive happens every Memorial Day weekend in Gardiner, Montana, as hundreds of horses are driven from the rodeo grounds up to the mountain town of Jardine. Hosted by Susan and Warren Johnson of Hell’s A-Roarin’ Outfitters, this Western tradition honors veterans and supports them in a meaningful way. All net proceeds from the event’s live auction go toward purchasing Action Trackchairs—custom, all-terrain wheelchairs that help disabled veterans regain their freedom and access to the outdoors. It’s a powerful mix of community, heritage, and heartfelt purpose.
