WELCOME TO MONTANA! If you have ever crossed the state line, you know the moment. Big sky, open road, and that iconic sign letting you know you made it. Now, that first impression is getting a refresh.

State leaders recently revealed a brand new “Welcome to Montana” highway sign, the first update in more than a decade. The current signs have been in place since 2014, so this change has been a long time coming. And this time, Montanans had a say in what it would look like.
Back in November, three design options were released to the public, and residents were invited to vote on their favorite. More than 11,000 people weighed in before the end of the year, ultimately choosing the design that will soon greet travelers at the border.
The new look ties into Montana’s updated statewide branding that rolled out last year. It aims to reflect everything that makes the state stand out, from the wide open prairies in the east to the rugged mountain ranges in the west. The goal is simple. Make that first impression feel like Montana.
Installation is set to begin later this month, with crews placing the signs at 34 major highway entry points across the state. Timing will depend on weather and access, which is pretty on-brand for Montana.

For locals, it will be a fresh sight when coming home. For visitors, it is a new introduction to the Treasure State. Either way, that moment at the border is about to look a little different.
