Winter has been kind of hit and miss in Montana this year. Some spots have been more affected than others, and while some winters are worse than others, Montana holds a few records when it comes to winter.

First, we are home to the worlds largest snowflake.

Back in 1887 there was a snowflake that was 15 inches wide and 8 inches thick. Now, I realize that may sound a little hard to believe for some, but hey, a record is a record. The next Montana "claim to fame" when it comes to winter is the record for the coldest temperature in the lower 48.

In Rogers Pass back in 1954 the temperature hit a low of 70 below zero.

Montana has one more winter fact to pass along. You may or may not be aware that a Montana town makes the Top 10 for coldest towns in the United States. In order to be considered for the list, one of the requirements is that you must have a population of over 20 thousand people.

With an average annual temperature of 40.1 degrees, this Montana town is not only one of the most historic, but one of the coldest in the country. Known for it's mining history, the town of Butte makes the Top 10 for Coldest Towns in America.

In fact, Butte is the only town in Montana that made the list.
