What Out-of-Staters Always Get Wrong About Montana
Let’s talk stereotypes for a minute—because let’s be real, every place has them. And no matter how much we evolve as a society, we humans just can’t seem to quit making assumptions about people based on where they’re from.
Take me for example—I’m originally from Georgia, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been hit with, “So, you must be into NASCAR, eat squirrel for breakfast, and drink beer every day that ends in ‘Y.’” I mean… sure, I have eaten squirrel before (guilty as charged), but the rest? Not so much.
It’s funny and frustrating all at the same time. Montana isn’t immune to stereotypes either. We recently asked our listeners, “What’s something people from out of state always get wrong about Montana?” And boy, did the answers roll in.
From wild misconceptions to hilarious experiences, here are some of the most common (and incorrect) assumptions people make about Montanans. Let’s set the record straight, shall we?
“Montanans Ride Horses Everywhere”
This one came up a lot, and I was surprised. I mean, come on, people, it’s 2025… we do, in fact, have cars, trucks, and lately, Prius here in Montana. Sure, many people out here ride, but we’re not galloping into town to pick up groceries. Maybe it’s just a running joke people like to make about Montanans—but let’s clear it up: our horsepower usually has four wheels these days.
"Cost of Living Is Cheap"
This one's a big myth. Just because Montana is rural and has more cows than people doesn’t mean it’s affordable. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. They don’t call it the Last Best Place for nothing—everyone wants a piece of it, and that demand has driven prices way up. Housing, groceries, gas… it all adds up fast. So no, living in Big Sky Country isn’t the budget-friendly dream some outsiders imagine.
