New Study Shows Montana Is A Top Target For Holiday Fraud
The further we head into the future, the smarter scammers seem to get. It feels like back in the day it was a lot easier to spot a scam. I picture some overly enthusiastic person approaching me with a “great deal." Pretty easy to walk away from. Now things are different. Scammers do not need to meet you face to face anymore. They use technology, fake emails, cloned websites, and even AI-generated audio to mimic someone you trust. It is unsettling, and it is only getting more advanced.
So which states are getting hit the hardest during the holiday shopping season? A new study broke it down, and the findings definitely caught my eye. While states like Nevada, Alaska, and Wyoming sit at the top of the list, Montana also makes an appearance in the top 10.
Montana Lands In TOP 10 For SCAMS
Montana lands at number 10, and while we are not seeing the jaw dropping financial losses that places like Wyoming are facing, we do rank high in victimization rates. The study found Montana has one of the higher rates of credit card fraud victims at 4.90 per 100,000 residents. Also we have notable issues with counterfeit-related scams. Losses overall are moderate, but the frequency suggests scammers are putting more focus on Montana shoppers during the holiday rush.
Experts say the reason scams spike this time of year is simple. People during the holidays are distracted, rushed, emotional, and spending more than usual. Scammers know that is a perfect recipe for opportunity. Fake tracking emails, unbelievable discounts, and bogus marketplace listings suddenly seem more believable when you are juggling holiday stress.

The best defense is slowing down. Double-check those websites, avoid deals that seem too perfect, and never let a seller pressure you into a purchase that seems off. As the study makes clear, even Montana is not flying under the radar anymore. Stay sharp out there.
