Over the weekend, Montana State University hosted its 50th annual American Indian Council Powwow, marking the largest celebration of Native culture the school has seen. The two-day event took place at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse and welcomed the public to be part of it.

The powwow had multiple grand entries, where dancers filled the arena in full regalia. Sitting in the stands before it began, you could see participants getting ready, carefully putting on each layer. Every detail carried meaning, and it showed in the way they prepared.

Throughout the weekend, there were singing and dancing competitions across different styles and age groups. This year, the format was different because it was competition style and there were prizes on the table. The event also included a royalty pageant and brought in respected dancers and drum groups from across the region. Some people even came all the way down from Canada.

More than just a competition, the powwow created a space for cultural connection. Students and visitors had the chance to learn from one another and see different traditions. With hundreds of Native students on campus, events like this continue to grow and play an important role at MSU. Whether it is your first time attending or something you look forward to every year, it is an experience that sticks with you.
