We’ve all done it, sat around daydreaming about what life would look like if we hit the lottery. Maybe you’d quit your job the very next day, buy a garage full of fancy cars, or spend your life hopping from one dream vacation to the next. And with Powerball sitting at a jaw-dropping $1.3 billion, people across the country are scooping up tickets and imagining exactly that.

It’s not the biggest jackpot we’ve ever seen, but it’s right up there in the Top 5. The all-time record was a mind-bending $2.04 billion back in 2022, followed by $1.765 billion in 2023, and a $1.586 billion pot way back in 2016. The most recent monster jackpot was just last year in Oregon at $1.326 billion. Now here we are again, September 3, 2025, with another billion-dollar shot at changing someone’s life forever.

Scrolling through comment sections on social media, I kept seeing two topics pop up again and again: First, how much money do you actually take home? Spoiler alert, it’s not $1.3 billion. After taxes and choosing the lump sum, you’re looking at less than half.

If a Montana resident won the $1.3 billion Powerball and chose the lump sum, here’s the breakdown:

  • Lump Sum Value (60% of jackpot): $780,000,000
  • Federal Taxes (37%): –$288,600,000
  • Montana State Taxes (6.75%): –$52,650,000
  • Estimated Take-Home: $438,750,000

Second, everyone seems convinced that “someone in California” will end up winning. And honestly, it’s not the worst guess. California has produced more Powerball winners than most states, alongside hot spots like Florida, Missouri, and Pennsylvania.

Montana Power Ball Winner

According to the official Powerball website, Montana actually had a big winner in last night’s drawing! Two tickets matched all five white balls and, thanks to the $1 Power Play® add-on, boosted their winnings to a cool $2 million each. Those lucky tickets were sold right here in Montana and over in North Carolina. So congrats to whoever that was!
