The Geminids Meteor shower is regarded as one of the most spectacular of the year. In 2024, the Geminids will be active from December 2nd to December 21st, peaking on the night of December 12th-13th. However, this year, a nearly full moon will try to steal the spotlight, or should we say...provide too much spotlight at 92% illumination.

For those looking to be a part of this celestial event, it may pose a challenge for those hoping to catch the show but is still worth a gander.

The Geminids are unique, offering an impressive light show even before midnight. Originating from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon, these meteors are often bright, colorful, and medium-slow in speed. Unlike other meteor showers, which hit their stride post-midnight, the Geminids start their display as early as 8 PM, peak around 2 AM, and continue into the morning hours.

What can you expect during the event?

Under optimal conditions, the Geminids can produce an average of 75 meteors per hour during their peak. But like we said, the moon will have her brights on during that time. Still, all is not lost for determined skywatchers. To maximize your chances, face away from the moon and find a location with minimal light pollution, which we have the upper hand in Montana. Yee-haw, (to the bad east coast).

Regardless of your location, if the weather cooperates, the brightest meteors will still make their dramatic appearance over Montana, offering glimpses of nature's fireworks despite the moon's dramatic stage presence.

So mark it on your calendars and get ready for the show!

These Montana Cities Get The Most Sun Each Year

CurrentResults' show that the following 6 Montana cities enjoy the most sunny days in the Treasure State. They label sunny days as days when clouds cover up to 30% of the sky and partly sunny days as days when the clouds are covering between 31% and 70% of the sky. They then add those two days up to give us our total days of sun in Montana
