Is Montana One Of The Most Sinful States In America?
How well behaved is Montana? It is kind of a funny question, but also a fair one. If I had to guess without looking at any numbers, I would say we are probably pretty middle of the road. We are rural, spread out, and not exactly known for chaos. That said, when I first moved here I was surprised by how serious the DUI issue can be.

A new report from WalletHub took a stab at ranking the so called Most Sinful States for 2026. The study looked at seven categories tied to behavior patterns. These included anger and hate related offenses, jealousy linked crimes like theft, overindulgence and vices, greed, lust, vanity, and laziness. Researchers compared all 50 states using crime data, public health numbers, and other social indicators.

So where did Montana land?
Overall, Montana ranked 30th. That puts us right in the middle. We placed 11th for anger and hatred and 10th for excess and vices. Interestingly, the state ranked 5th for greed. On the flip side, Montana came in 38th for jealousy and 39th for lust.

The numbers paint a mixed picture. Not the wild west of wrongdoing, but not squeaky clean either. No surprise, but Nevada, home of “Sin City,” took the number one slot. The least sinful state? Wyoming! I guess they have a little cowboy hat halo over their heads, but they are the least populated as well.
