Montana is home to a few different institutions of higher learning.

There's Billings, Bozeman, Butte, Great FallsHelena, and Missoula, just to name a few, but when it comes down to which is the best, as far as college towns, it's always between Bozeman and Missoula.

One publication is on record saying that Bozeman is the best college town in America and has been for two years. I mean, I get it. I live in Bozeman, and there's always something going on with MSU. The community takes a ton of pride in the University. Whether it's all the Bobcat apparel you see people wearing, or the signs in all of the businesses, or the massive number of people that show up to tailgate.

Missoula is home to the University of Montana and was once home to me as well. So, I've lived in both and I have pretty strong opinions on which one I prefer.

The folks over at WalletHub also have some pretty strong opinions. They gathered data and put together research for the best college towns in America based on the following criteria:

  • Wallet Friendliness
  • Social Environment
  • Academic and Economic Rank

Both Bozeman and Missoula are expensive places to live, although Missoula is slightly less expensive. Both have a great social vibe, although Missoula is bigger, so it might have more to offer. When it comes to education, every stat I see has MSU outranking UM for both academics and cost.

Which Montana city is a better college town

According to WalletHub, when it comes to the best college town in Montana, that honor goes to the city of ... Missoula.

Source: WalletHub

In fact, Missoula was ranked 55th in the country, while Bozeman was ranked 220th. Now, I'm not sure how I feel about this. I certainly don't agree with it. I'm not saying that Missoula isn't a fine college town, because it is. But to have it ranked 55th and Bozeman 220th?

I disagree.
