It’s weird times, folks. There’s a lot happening across the country, and in case you missed it, we’re still dealing with a partial government shutdown. It’s one of those stories that hasn’t been front and center, but it’s starting to show up in ways people are noticing. Think TSA staffing, long lines at major airports, and even some flight cancellations.
Here in Montana, things have stayed pretty steady so far. But there is some concern about what could happen if this situation drags on. The ongoing shutdown started Feb. 14, 2026. The longest partial government shutdown lasted 35 days from 2018 and rolled into 2019.
According to federal officials, smaller airports across the country could eventually face closures if funding issues tied to the Department of Homeland Security continue. That has caught the attention of airport leaders here at home.
The director of aviation and transit for Billings-Logan International Airport said the idea of smaller airports shutting down is unsettling. He explained that losing service, even temporarily, would be tough on both the local community and the surrounding region.
According to another news source, about 50,000 TSA agents are missing  paychecks this week, no-shows have nearly doubled, and many TSA workers have quit.

Right now, Montana airports are not seeing major disruptions. Billings is operating as usual. Over in Bozeman, spring break travel is picking up, but there have been no major TSA-related delays. Airports in Great Falls and Missoula are reporting similar conditions.

Most of the issues are happening at larger hub airports in other states. Still, travelers are encouraged to stay updated with their airlines and give themselves extra time, just in case.
