Earlier this week was National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day, and it got people talking about the local spots they love most. Here in Montana, small businesses are a big part of what makes each town feel like home. They are the places you return to again and again, not just for the product, but for the people behind the counter.

The day itself is meant to recognize the role small businesses play in communities across the country. They keep local economies moving, create jobs, and add character you just do not get from big chain stores. It is also a reminder to support them whenever you can.
We asked Montanans to share their favorites, and the list covered a little bit of everything. In Butte, both Freeway Tavern and Annie’s Cafe got shoutouts for their longtime presence and loyal following. Over in Gardiner, the legendary Corral Burgers, formerly known as Hellen’s Burgers, has been serving up famously juicy burgers for generations.
Closer to Bozeman, locals highlighted The Western Cafe along with The Barn, which serves up coffee. In Helena, General Mercantile made the list, while Fezziwig’s Montana Mercantile was a favorite nearby. Other mentions included Kountry Korner Cafe, Rise and Shine Cafe, and 4-B’s in Billings.
