Authorities Identify Suspect In Brutal Montana Murder
UPDATE: The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office arrested 41-year-old Daren Christopher Abbey in connection with the murder of Dustin Kjersem south of Big Sky, Montana.

On Thursday, October 10, Dustin Kjersem left his home in Belgrade, Montana to go camping for the weekend. He went to a spot he was familiar with, Moose Creek, which is along Highway 191 between Bozeman and Big Sky. Kjersem had planned to meet with his girlfriend the next day, but that never happened. The girlfriend discovered Kjersem deceased inside his tent on the morning of Saturday, October 12. At first, it looked like a bear attack, but upon further investigation, it was determined that Kjersem was brutally murdered.
Suspect Arrested in Brutal Montana Murder Case
According to a press release from the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office, Daren Christopher Abbey admitted to killing Dustin Kjersem. Abbey as arrested on a probation violation in Butte, Montana. The suspect is reportedly cooperating with detectives and led them to evidence that is believed to have been removed from the crime scene. The items include an Estwing axe, two firearms, and an orange Yeti Tundra 45 cooler.
Sheriff Dan Springer said the investigation into the homicide is ongoing. There is no longer a threat to the community, it is safe to resume outdoor activities. A motive for the attack is unknown at this time.
The Sheriff’s Office will have no further comment in regards to the investigation until charges are filed.
