Montana Weather Alert: Tips to Survive a Dangerous Heatwave
Just a few weeks ago, fresh snow dusted Montana's mountain peaks. Now, the Treasure State is facing an unprecedented heatwave with temperatures well above 100°F this weekend.
Some towns in eastern Montana, like Miles City, Glendive, and Sidney, are bracing for blistering, record-breaking temperatures of about 110°F on Sunday.
With extreme weather alerts active across the state, it might not be the best time for outdoor enthusiasts to hit the trail. This heat is no joke, and you'll need to take steps to prevent heat exhaustion and dehydration. Drink water, and a lot of it.
If you plan on floating a river this weekend, don't forget sunscreen and try to limit your time in direct sunlight. For residents without air conditioning, you can keep your home cool by closing all doors and windows and drawing all blinds. That will help keep out some of the heat.
Staying safe during the dog days of summer is extremely important. Wear lightweight clothing, drink water constantly, and make sure to check on your friends and neighbors. Never leave your children or pets in your vehicle. Car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in minutes.
You don't need to go out and spend a bunch of money on a new air conditioner. You can stay cool in the backyard by running through a sprinkler or visiting local swimming holes.
Here's an old trick and a little Grandma wisdom. Soak a washcloth in ice-cold water and put it to your face and neck. That's what my Grandma used to do for me, and it always seemed to help me cool down on a hot summer day.
