In case you missed it, a big reveal happened on Indigenous Peoples Day, October 13th, right here in Bozeman. Montana State University unveiled its newest addition to the American Indian Hall, the Elouise Cobell Garden Arbor. The space isn't just another pretty addition to campus. It's a purpose-built outdoor classroom designed for learning, reflection, and honoring Indigenous culture.

The project was a collaboration between MSU Facilities Management, the Department of Native American Studies, ThinkOne Architecture, and Blanton Contracting. The roughly 3,000-square-foot space blends natural elements and cultural intention. Surrounded by native grasses, trees, and plants chosen for their ceremonial and environmental significance, the arbor feels deeply connected to the land it sits on.

"The arbor is dedicated to the late Blackfeet tribal elder and activist Elouise Cobell, who was educated at MSU and received an honorary doctorate in 2002. Cobell’s son, Turk, and daughter-in-law, Bobbie, attended the event in her honor. " - Montana State University.

At its heart is a steel arbor painted in greens and golds, supported by lodgepole pine columns that bring a natural warmth to the structure. Every detail is deliberate and meaningful. Handpicked boulders and flagstones serve as seating and gathering areas, and even the fire pit. With shade sails, Wi-Fi, and power access, it's a modern classroom rooted in tradition.

MSU leaders say the project reflects their ongoing commitment to Indigenous students and education. It's meant to be a place of connection. It's a place where stories, knowledge, and community can thrive. The Elouise Cobell Garden Arbor stands as a symbol of collaboration and respect for Montana's Indigenous heritage. Blanton Contracting played a key role in bringing that vision to life, building not just a structure but a lasting tribute to culture, learning, and unity.

Montana's Museum Of The Rockies Is For Everyone! Check It Out

Museum of the Rockies is nestled right next to Bobcat Stadium in Bozeman. The Museum is part of the American Alliance of Museums, which means that the Museum of the Rockies is one of the 1,095 museums to hold this distinction. With over 33,000 museums nationwide, this is quite an accomplishment.

The Museum of the Rockies is also part of the Montana Dinosaur Trail. What is that? It is a trail that runs through the state of Montana and has 14 locations. Each location will get you just a little closer to the history and knowledge of Dinosaurs.

Museum of the Rockies has current and rotating exhibits. Currently, (December 2021) here are some of my favorites that are on display: Siebel Dinosaur Complex, Welcome to Yellowstone Country, which digs into the history of Montana, Enduring Peoples Exhibit, highlighting the American Indians of Montana, and the Paugh Exhibit, illuminating the stories that connect us with the Northern Colorado Rockies. You can see all the exhibits here to make planning your trip easier.

Museum of the Rockies is an independent 501 Non-Profit here in Bozeman. With that being said, they hold some of the most exquisite benefits throughout the year. This gives the museum the opportunity to continue to be a highlight for the city of Bozeman. Another way to continue the success of the Museum of the Rockies is to become a member.

If you are considering donating to the Museum of the Rockies, you can check it out here and decide which program works best for you. Help Bozeman keep this amazing learning tool open and available to everyone. Enjoy your time at the Museum of the Rockies.
