If you've spent any time at the grocery store in the last year or two, you know that the prices continue to rise.

Here in Montana as prices continue to go up, some folks are having to make tough choices when it comes to providing for their families. It's not just name-brand items that have increased in price, even the essentials are more expensive and that has many Montanans scrambling to make ends meet.

However, some chain grocery stores are known for their lower prices, and it just so happens that we have many of them located across Big Sky Country.

For many Montanans on a budget, grocery shopping includes going to multiple stores. Whether it's to save a buck or two, or it just so happens that a particular store carries a product you need. So, going to more than one store for all of your grocery needs is pretty normal.

Before we reveal which Montana chain stores made the most affordable list, let's look at some of our most beloved Montana restaurants no longer around.

Montana's most affordable chain grocery stores

US News and World Report released a list of the 10 most affordable grocery stores in America and Montana is home to 3 of the 10. So which stores on the list are in Montana? Winco, Costco, and Sam's Club.

First, there is Costco. Based out of Washington, Costco is a warehouse grocery store that sells items in large quantities. Looking for toilet paper? They have it, Seafood? Yep. Tires? A fridge? Electronics, clothes, bakery items, a food court? Gas? Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes. Costo has multiple locations in Montana including Helena and Kalispell.

Next, there is Sam's Club. Much like Costco this warehouse store sells everything. And just as Costco is known for its Kirkland brand, Sam's brand is Member's Mark. And just like Costco, Sam's Club requires a yearly membership. You can find Sam's located in both Billings and Great Falls.

Finally, Winco has several locations across the state including Billings, Bozeman, and Missoula. The company, based in Idaho is a favorite of locals. They are known for carrying name-brand items and their own "Winco" brand items. Plus, they have a large selection of bulk foods as well.

Of course, these are chain stores. Several locally owned grocery stores across the state also have great prices. Town and Country Foods is one of them. Not only is Town and Country local, but it's also owned by its employees and there are several locations.
