For those of us who love the great outdoors, Montana is a dream.

From hunting to fishing, from skiing to hiking, if it's done outdoors, you can bet you can do it here in Montana. Oh, and it doesn't matter your skill or dedication level, there is something here for everyone.

One of the most popular outdoor pastimes in The Last Best Place is camping. Every year millions of locals and non-locals set out to have a big adventure in Big Sky Country and often that includes a tent, a camper, or just a sleeping bag. Having spent my fair share of nights under the stars, could there be a better place than Montana to camp?

Turns out, that answer is yes. According to new information, many of the states surrounding Montana are much better for camping than here in Big Sky Country.

Where does Montana rank when it comes to camping?

According to data from No Repair Cost which included analyzing 16 different factors, the best place to camp in the United States is just over the border in Idaho. Idaho wasn't the only neighboring state that outranked Montana. Utah came in 2nd followed by Colorado in 4th, Oregon in 6th, Wyoming in 7th, and Washington in 14th.

Montana came in 15th place.

Maybe you're thinking this is a good thing. Maybe you're one of those Montanans tired of all of the tourists and transplants taking all the good camping spots. If so, you're certainly not alone. A large portion of Montanans have had more than enough of those wanna-be road warriors invading The Treasure State with their big RVs.

However, for those who are just a little curious, it seems that Montana didn't rank too high on the following:

  • Nature and Attractions ( I rolled my eyes when I saw that)
  • Accessibility and Affordability
  • Environmental and Safety Conditions

So for all of you living outside of Montana thinking about spending time here, just remember, there are several other states nearby that are far better suited for your outdoor needs.
