I don't dive into politics too much, but when a former President of the United States visits Montana, that's kind of big news.

So, you can imagine the surprise of the folks at the Sweet Grass Pharmacy Soda Fountain in Big Timber when former President Bill Clinton walked in and ordered a strawberry milkshake.

I'm certainly not an expert on the inner workings of former presidents, but often times when a former or current president makes a visit, the are preparations ahead of time. That, however, was not the case. No one in the store knew he was coming. After the visit to the pharmacy, the former president apparently checked out a local antique store in the small town.

Why was President Clinton in Montana?

No one seems to know the answer to that question, and if they do, they're not sharing it. While Montana is home to many powerful people, maybe the former president was just visiting as any other tourist.

I know personally that he is a big fan of the state. I had the chance to interview him years ago when his wife was running for president the first time. I was living in Missoula and he was coming to Stevensville. We chatted for a few minutes about Montana and he told me this story about a cafe that he visited while Governor of Arkansas many years before. He remembered what he had to eat, the name of the owner of the cafe, and the highway it was on.

I remember being impressed.
