We are well past summer now and smack in the middle of fall. It's that magical time when the air gets crisp, pumpkin spice is everywhere, and the mountain peaks start to show off that first dusting of white. Here in Montana, that snowy tease means one thingski season is right around the corner. Soon, the light flurries will turn into full-on blankets of snow, and locals will be strapping on their skis.

Now, we all know the Rockies, especially the parts in Montana, are prime territory for the good powder. Sorry East Coasters, but your slopes are basically ice skating rinks with a hill. Out here, it's all about soft, fluffy, carve-worthy snow that dreams are made of. And it seems the rest of the country is catching on too, because Montana just made a huge splash in Condé Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards 2025.

Big Sky Resort landed an impressive #2 spot on the Top 30 Ski Resorts in the U.S., coming in right behind Aspen Mountain. That's right, almost the best in the country. Big Sky pulled a whopping 92.11 rating, just shy of Aspen's 92.29. Not bad for our little slice of paradise in Southwest Montana.

  1. Aspen Mountain 92.29
  2. Big Sky 92.11
  3. Bretton Woods 91.69
  4. Telluride 91.64
  5. Jackson Hole 91.47

Between the powder, après-ski charm, and breathtaking mountain views, there's no question Montana's ski scene is second to none. So wax up those skis, grab your warmest gear, and get ready. Big Sky's calling... and this winter, it's coming in hotor should we say cold.

Vintage Photos Of Montana

It's hard to imagine what Yellowstone National Park would look like in black and white. We are so used to seeing the colors that make it one of America's favorite travel destinations. Jezel Doughert's grandmother passed away and like many of us do, she spent hours going through years and years of history, from old yearbooks to news clippings, to pictures. Jezel sent me a piece of history that, if not for her, I wouldn't be able to share with you.

Here's 8 States That Have Longer And Harsher Winters Than Montana

Winter can be brutal here in Montana with lots of wind, snow, and temperatures well below zero. In fact, that alone should be a word of warning for those thinking of moving here from warmer climates.

A lot goes into being prepared to live in a state with rough winters and if you've never done it before, you certainly need to make sure that you are prepared. You need to make sure you have the right tires, vehicle, and winter clothing. Plus, I would highly suggest you learn how to drive in winter conditions before moving to a state that celebrates winter 6 months out of the year.

And while winters can be very rough here in Montana, we don't even crack the Top 5 for States With The Most Brutal Winters.
